Necklace pearls

Pearls in a necklace need to be matching shapes, sizes and colours to be pleasing to the eye. They do not have to be absolutely identical as this would look artificial – all pearls will vary slightly. It is usually very easy to judge when a string of freshwater pearl jewellery looks wrong. For example in a neckace of 7-8mm pearls it would look odd if there was a group of larger pearls to one side or if there was a small pearl sandwiched in between 2 larger ones. It is best to examine a necklace by putting it on a light cloth background in natural daylight. Avoid indoor lighting, UV lights or direct sunlight. The luster should be good and the pearls should not look chalky, yellow or dull. Pearls which are naturally coloured my have slight variations in tone but these should not be too obvious and small variations will make the piece more interesting. Hold the necklace in your hands and examine it from different angles. Try not to be too judgemental – a pearl necklace will never be absolutely perfect but if it looks OK it probably is.
