benefits for being unemployed and tax

I am out of work ou the moment and have to put a claim in for benefits. I would like to know are unemployment benefits subject to income tax or not? If they are does that get taken automatically or do I have to sort it out myself? This is all new to me as I've never been out of work before, or at least not for a long enough period of time to warrent claiming benefits. I'm not completely sure of all the benefits I will be entitled to claim but obviously I will be claiming job-seekers allowance. Do you have to pay income tax on all benefits if any? I would hope you don't as the payments are a lot lower than if you were working and receiving a wage. I am looking for work and have a few job interviews lined up so hopefully this won't be something I have to deal with for long, but do need to get this sorted just in case. Any help will be great appreciated, thank you.
